Morning Catchups

The sun crept up with a warm orange glow,
And painted the meadow in gold down below.
The bridge stood still in the soft morning haze,
As the world slowly woke from its sleepy-eyed daze.
Then up sat the cow with a big toothy grin,
Her spots all in order, her day to begin.
She plopped on the grass with a comfortable thud,
Quite happy and round in the dewy green mud.
Three herons came stepping on long spindly feet,
With wide blinking eyes and their beaks built to greet.
They tilted their heads with a curious stare,
“Good morning, dear cow! What is new over there?”
“Oh nothing much, friends,” said the cow with a laugh,
“Just sitting here, watching the sun cut its path.
The grass is quite lovely, the sky is quite blue,
And nothing feels better than catching up with you!”
The herons leaned in with their goggle-wide eyes,
They gossiped of fish and of cloud-painted skies.
Of which patch of river runs coldest and clear,
And whether the storm on the right would come near.
No phones, no alarms, no meetings to dread,
Just good morning sunshine and good friends instead.
A cow and three herons, an odd little crew,
But the best kind of morning is shared between two.
So here is the secret the meadow has kept
The day always shines for the ones who have stepped
Outside in the early and soft golden light,
To catch up with friends and to make the world right.
